A Morning of Remembrance

Sunday  -  September 11, 2011  -  10:00 AM

Friends and neighbors are invited to attend the Old Stone Church on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 10:00am for a time of remembrance.  Prayers will be offered for those who lost loved ones and friends on Sept. 11, 2001 and its aftermath.  Prayers and thanksgiving will be raised for those who continue to serve and protect our communities and nation.

While this will be a Christian worship service, people of all traditions are invited.   Pastor Robert W. Fretz will speak about God’s gift of wisdom as the cornerstone towards recovery, respect,  and peace for all his children.

Hurricane Irene Passing By

There has been flooding but little wind damage as of noon, Sunday Morning.  The Education Building was opened at 3 am as an emergency station… three hours ahead of schedule because all roads crossing the Saddle River were closed or closing.  For a while, Upper Saddle River was a town divided by water.  The police and volunteers from the Upper Saddle Fire Department and the Saddle River Rescue Squad were in Fellowship Hall.  As they waited for one of their numerous calls, John Seibert and Pastor Bob Fretz provided hospitality including French Toast and Chili.  The water started to subside and the first responders returned to their stations.  Thanks goes to them for serving our community and keeping us safe!

Hurricane Irene Arrives

Due to the wind and rain to be created by Hurricane Irene,  the Old Stone Church has cancelled Sunday Morning Worship.  Please stay home and stay safe.  We will see you next week.

The Minnick Education Building will be used by the USRFD and Ambulance Corps as a staging area beginning at 7:00 AM Sunday Morning.  If you are unable to stay in your home, you can use the Education Building at 500 East Saddle River Road as a shelter.  Please bring medications, blankets, and other emergency supplies you have from home.

Rutgers and Newark High School Students

Science Preserves USR Heritage

Dr Alec Gates, Chairman of the Earth and Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University in Newark organized students from Rutgers and Newark High School to help preserve the gravesites of the African American Cemetery owned by the Upper Saddle River Historical Society.

The cemetery was in use between c.1775 and the early 1900′s.  While initially provided for African American slaves who worked for the Hopper Family, it became the burial site for those who remained in the Saddle River Valley after the complete NJ manumission in 1846.  Perhaps the last burial in the cemetery was Samuel Hopper who worked at the Abram Hopper Saw Mill just north of the present Creative Gardens.

The USR Historic Society is planning to remark the grave sites and create a display on the history of the cemetery as well as the contribution of  African Americans in the creation and development of the Upper Saddle River Valley.

MY9 News, NJ Channel 12, WMBC-TV, The Bergen Record, Star Ledger, and 88.1 Jazz Radio out of Newark covered the event.  The TV channels plan to broadcast their reports tonight, August 17.  They will also post their material on their websites.
